Answering common questions
When someone dies, families are often left with questions they never expected to ask. Bay Tree Funerals are here to give calm, clear and honest guidance at every stage.
Guidance when you need it most
Every family’s situation is different. Some people contact us immediately after a death, while others simply need reassurance or practical advice before making any decisions.
What should I do first when someone dies?
If the death was expected, contact the GP, district nurse, hospice team or hospital staff involved in your loved one’s care. If the death was sudden or unexpected, call 999.
When should I call the funeral director?
You can call Bay Tree Funerals whenever you feel ready. Many families call us very early for guidance, even before all the medical paperwork has been completed.
What happens if the coroner is involved?
Sometimes the coroner may need to review the death or arrange a post-mortem examination. This is often a routine process when the cause of death needs to be confirmed.
Can the funeral still go ahead if there is an inquest?
In many cases, yes. The coroner may issue interim paperwork which allows funeral arrangements to continue before the full inquest has concluded.
How soon does the funeral need to happen?
There is no exact rule. The timing depends on paperwork, family arrangements, venue availability, religious requirements and personal wishes.
Can I spend time with my loved one?
Yes. Many families find comfort in visiting their loved one in the chapel of rest. We can explain the options and arrange visits when appropriate.
Can I choose cremation or burial?
Yes. We can explain both options clearly and help you decide what feels right for your loved one and your family.
Can funerals be personalised?
Absolutely. Many families choose personal music, special vehicles, photographs, colours, floral tributes or unique touches that reflect the person’s life and personality.
Do I need to visit the funeral home straight away?
No. We can initially speak with you over the phone and arrange an appointment when you feel ready.
How much does a funeral cost?
The cost depends on the type of funeral chosen and any third-party costs such as crematorium or cemetery fees. We will always explain costs clearly before any decisions are made.
Can family help carry the coffin?
Yes. Some families choose to help carry the coffin themselves, while others prefer professional bearers. We can guide you through the options.
Can I arrange a simple or unattended cremation?
Yes. We offer attended funerals, simple services and unattended cremation options depending on the wishes of the family and the person who has died.
What documents will I need?
You do not usually need every document immediately. The hospital, GP, Medical Examiner or coroner will explain when the registration paperwork is ready.
Can you help with flowers, orders of service and notices?
Yes. We can help arrange floral tributes, printed orders of service, funeral notices and many of the personal details that families may need support with.
Can we have a religious or non-religious service?
Yes. We arrange religious funerals, non-religious funerals and services for families of many different beliefs, faiths and backgrounds.
What if I simply do not know what to do?
That is completely understandable. Most families have never had to arrange a funeral before. We will guide you gently through each stage and explain everything clearly.
