Tailor made Funeral Plans

If none of Open’s set plans is exactly what you had in mind, we can work with you to tailor a plan that specifically meets your needs. You may find it useful to use one of our plans as a guide to help you begin the process. Then you could add an extra limousine if required, or decide that you would prefer the service to take place in your local church rather than a crematorium chapel.

Whatever your thoughts, talk to us and we’ll guide you through the planning process. Then your chosen funeral director will detail all the fees and charges giving you a final amount to pay. Whatever your agreed plans, we promise to provide the funeral of your choice with absolutely no further costs at the time of need.

Question about funeral plans

Why choose an Open Prepaid Funeral Plan?

Open provide a totally transparent and secure method of planning your funeral. We are committed to the provision of your funeral through your chosen Funeral Director.

It may sound like a cliché but we chose the name Open as a clear sign of our operating model. We’re Open by name and open by nature.

Although we are not obliged to, we are quite open about our admin fees and growth figures. Here are some key points that make us different from other prepaid funeral plan providers and that you should consider when choosing a plan provider.

  • We have one single admin fee of £195.00
  • No commissions or additional fees are taken from the plan price you pay
  • We have no cancellation fee
  • The growth the Open Prepaid Funerals Trust apply to the plans consistently exceeds inflation

We’re also a Funeral Planning Authority Registered Provider which means that we meet exacting standards when it comes to the way we operate. You can learn more about the FPA here https://funeralplanningauthority.co.uk/

In simple terms, Open offer the best available balance of rate of return and lowest administrative fees of any like for like funeral planning company.

Open are the only prepaid funeral plan provider that applies the same rate of growth to the third party costs as they do to the funeral director costs element of your plan. The competition only apply RPI (Retail Price Index) or CPI (Consumer Price Index) growth and as no one can openly (without conditions) guarantee to cover third party costs at the time of need there’s a much better chance of them being covered in full with an Open plan. The difference could be hundreds of pounds.

We know that our many of our competitors in addition to the standard administration fee take between £700.00 and £1,300.00 from the price you pay depending on circumstances. If you have any doubt just ask. This could cause issues at the time of need.

Open don’t just look after you and your plan, we look after the funeral directors who will look after you and your family at the time of need. We have a funeral directing background and know and understand what goes into a funeral.

Why Prepay for your Funeral?

The cost of a funeral over the last decade has outstripped inflation mainly due to the rising fees for doctors, crematoria and clergy. By prepaying for your funeral you can secure today’s prices for your future requirement.

There are many benefits to taking out a prepaid funeral plan. A prepaid funeral plan protects you against inflation and rising funeral costs. It also protects your loved ones by reducing the stress and financial burden of arranging a funeral.

Financial guarantee:

According to the SunLife Cost of Dying Report, 2018, average funeral costs have gone up by 122.5% since 2004 and the projected average cost of a funeral will be £5,120.00 by 2023.

Our funeral plan prices are fixed at today’s costs so you will be protected against future rises in funeral director costs, also by taking out an Open Prepaid Funeral Plan you can rest assured that all your funeral director services will be paid for in full, regardless of any interim rise in the cost of your funeral director fees.

Our funeral plan prices are fixed at today’s costs so you will be protected against future rises in ever increasing funeral director costs, also by taking out an Open Prepaid Funeral Plan you can rest assured that all your services will be paid for in full, regardless of any interim rise in the cost of your funeral director fees

Personalisation:

A Funeral Plan also offers the added benefit of personalisation; you can be remembered the way you want to be. You can make your own decisions about your funeral and create a personal funeral that’s unique to you. It also reduces the concerns and stress of your loved ones who would otherwise be left to guess what you would have wanted for your funeral.

An Open Prepaid Funeral Plan can offer all of the above, giving you financial reassurance and guarantee that you will receive the funeral of your wishes.

Funeral Planning

We all know that we should be planning for our future, especially when it comes to our funeral. Prearranging your funeral may feel like an odd thing to do but for those you leave behind it’s a caring and selfless act. A prepaid funeral plan relieves your loved ones of the burden of planning your funeral during what will be a stressful and upsetting time.

There are many questions that need to be asked when planning a funeral. By determining your choices now you can design a funeral to your personal taste. And our plans are flexible so if you change your mind about anything just get in touch.

Burial or cremation?

Do you know whether you want a burial or a cremation, and would your loved ones know your choice? If you choose a burial, you will need to make early decisions about your type of coffin, (for example, would you like a traditional, contemporary, wood or wicker coffin?). You’ll also need to consider where you want to be buried, a natural woodland setting or a traditional cemetery? Do you already have a plot purchased? If not should you consider this?

Music?

Depending on whether you want your funeral to be a celebration of your life or a more sombre affair, music is a key element. By preplanning your funeral you can choose the songs you want to be played that reflect your personal taste. Whether you choose live, pre-recorded or a range of hymns, your choice is certain to be personal and moving. And believe us, you don’t have to be traditional with your choice, we have some wonderful and very funny choices from our plan holders!

Flowers or donations?

Many people would prefer their funeral guests to donate to a chosen charity rather than send flowers. This is one of the things you can specify when planning the finer details of your funeral. You can also determine whether you would like a personal tribute, simple or seasonal flowers.

Transport?

Whilst a hearse is the traditional method of transporting a coffin, you can specify whether you would prefer a horse-drawn or driven vehicle. These decisions also take into consideration the method of transport for your loved ones. There are so many choices these days that you can literally have almost anything to suit your personality.

Venue?

You may have a venue that is very special to you and those closest to you that you feel would be most appropriate for your wake. Your favourite food, drink and entertainment can also be specified in your funeral plan with your funeral director.

There are many other details that you may wish to consider for your funeral. This is why Open Prepaid Funerals offer bespoke funeral planning alongside our standard plans.

An Open Prepaid funeral is the simplest, most caring and practical way to remove the financial worry and emotional burden that unexpected funeral arrangements can bring to your loved ones. It also allows you to relax in the knowledge your funeral wishes will be carried out exactly as you planned.

For more information please contact Open Prepaid Funerals or view our Funeral Plans for more detail about what we offer.

This can be done either with us or through an independent funeral director, just talk to us to learn more. All our plans can be adjusted to meet area requirements.

Once a plan has been chosen, payment arrangements agreed and your chosen funeral director nominated and confirmed, you can rest assured that your funeral wishes will be fulfilled and that there will be no further payments in relation to funeral services required.*

For those you leave behind, planning your funeral is a caring and selfless act. It relieves the stress and worry from those closest to you, at a time when they need help and support.

*Third party costs (also known as Disbursements) are set by local authorities and external bodies and therefore it cannot be guaranteed that 100% of the disbursement costs (not funeral director costs) will be covered at the time of need. Your chosen funeral director will be able to advise at the time.

How do I know I’m paying the right price for my plan?

We’ve always encouraged our plan holders to take out an Open funeral plan directly with their preferred funeral director. This way you get what you want at the price you should be paying. However, we recognise that there are people who want an accurately priced funeral plan but don’t really want to visit a funeral home and we understand that. So, we offer an accurate pricing service – our online prices are just guides but these same plans would be different prices all over the country depending on where you are and which funeral director your chose. So we’ll do the work for you. To find out more click here.

What if I want a burial?

As costs and arrangements can vary dramatically throughout the UK it is essential that you discuss these issues with us directly or with your local independent funeral director. Feel free to call us for more information and to discuss your needs.

What happens if I die while on holiday or away from home?

Your funeral director will arrange collection from anywhere in the UK, although a fee may apply. If you die abroad then repatriation costs will be incurred. Please check that your normal travel insurance policy covers this.

How can I pay for my funeral plan?

There are a number of ways. You can pay securely online through this website, you can pay by cheque or bank transfer or you can pay over a number of months, interest free over 12 months or up to 10 years (with charges that add to your plan value not to our bottom line)* by direct debit. Feel free to contact us directly by email or phone to discuss payment if you wish to.

What if I die before I have paid in full?

The plan will continue as you have requested and your estate or relatives will pay the difference between the plan value and the cost of the funeral.

Is my money safe?

Your payment is made into the Open Prepaid Funerals Trust Fund where it is managed by a board of trustees and investment managers. The trust fund is a separate entity and independent from Open Prepaid Funerals Limited. The trust fund is invested in a wide range of options to target long term growth.

Do I have to add third party costs?

No you don’t but we do recommend it. If you do choose to add a contribution towards disbursements, currently set at £1,100.00, they may be covered at the time of need. Unfortunately, because disbursement costs are not set by funeral directors the rate at which these costs increase are not in the control of the funeral director.

Can I personalise my plan?

The Open Plan is designed to be as personal to you as you wish; choose one of the standard plans and personalise that with your own preferences including readings, songs, hymns, flowers, donations to charity etc. We can also help you to create a completely unique plan to you either directly with us or through a local funeral director. Just get in touch with us for more details.

Is the company independently owned?

Open Prepaid Funerals Limited is a privately owned UK based company and has been successfully operating since 2003.

What happens if I move?

If you move we will endeavour to place you plan with a newly nominated funeral director local to your new residence. Should you wish to we will keep you involved in this process.

Can I cancel my plan?

You can cancel your plan at any time by contacting our customer enquiries department on 0330 660 0072. If you cancel your plan within 30 days of us notifying you that your plan is created on our system, we will refund you your payment in full, including the plan setup administration fee of £195.00. If you cancel your plan at any time after our 30 day cooling off period, we will refund your payment less the original administration fee of £195.00. Unlike many plan providers there are no additional cancellation charges with Open. For example, if you took out an Open plan through an independent funeral director and their plan costs were £3,500.00, the total amount payable to Open would be £3,695.00 (£3,500.00 plus £195.00). The amount that we would refund to you if you cancelled after the 30 day cooling off period would be £3,500.00. We think that’s fair and that you shouldn’t be penalised for a change in circumstances – don’t be afraid to check other providers terms and conditions and ask questions. We would make any refunds to you within 30 days of receiving your cancellation request in writing.

* A charge is made for instalment payments between 12 and 120 months which is equivalent to an APR of 4.9% however all of these additional charges are applied to the value of your plan and is not a way for us to make profit.
